Frequently Asked Questions on this Project - FAQ
AFGS is presenting abbreviated information on creating GEDCOM files as a guide only.
Make sure you back up your data before creating any files.

IMPORTANT: Please submit any questions to Bill  before submitting the file to AFGS.  AFGS will process your GEDCOM file when received and incorporate it with the other GEDCOM files. We will not be able to make corrections after you submit the file.

PAF  (PERSONAL ANCESTRAL FILE) Version 5 Software site also possibly earlier versions check the help section in your version.
 
NOTE: These instruction are only for creating a 5 generation pedigree chart for AFGS. See your help file for the complete instruction on creating GED files. Important Always backup your database before creating files.
 
From PAF Screen select Individual
From the Individual screen select the individual you want as number one on your 5 Generation Pedigree chart.
From PAF Screen select Pedigree to display the Pedigree view
 
From the File menu, select Export.
From Export Menu - Select section: Export to:
Select - Other GEDCOM 5.5
Select - Char Set: ANSI
From Export Menu - Select section: Include
Note: Uncheck all items then 
Select - Full Information on Living ( Not required by AFGS, check this only IF you want to submit that information ) or check Names on living
Select - Submitter
From Export Menu - Select section Select Individuals
Select - Partial
Select - Select
From Select Individuals Menu - Select section  Relationship Filter
Select - Ancestors
Select - Select
From Ancestors Menu
Set number of generations to 5
Descendant generations to 0
Do not check Include spouses
Do not check Include all parents
Select - OK
From Select Individuals Menu -  Select section  Filtered List
Check - Show Results Only - ( review list of people who will be exported to ged file ) 
From Select Individuals Menu 
Select - OK
From Export Menu 
Select - Export
A warning message may come up saying your ANSI character set may cause some characters to be lost and do you want to continue. Select Yes
You may now receive a message to add your name and address. Press OK and add the information now. 
You may now see a menu Export GEDCOM file as
In the section "Save in" make a note where you will be saving the file to. This way you can find the file later. 
In the section "File name" click on the area before the asterisk, delete the asterisk and type your file name. The file name for your first file will be your AFGS member number preceded by the letter a. If you are submitting 2 charts the second file name will be your AFGS member number preceded by the letter b.                                  SEE the FAQ for complete naming instruction
Example for 2 files it would be: a3677.ged  and b3677.ged for individual membership or a3677f.ged and b3677f.ged for family membership.  
Each pedigree chart must be in a separate file
The "File name" section should now show your AFGS number and the ged extension. Example: a3677.ged or a3677f.ged if you have a family membership. If your submitting  2 files the second file would be b3677.ged or b3677f.ged
Select Export
A screen should now display GEDCOM Export and the number of individuals and marriages exported. 
Select OK
You have just created your GED file in the directory you specified.
Suggest you import the ged file into a new Family file on your software, and review the information you will be submitting in the GEDCOM file.
In the email with your gedcom please identify the actual name of the person you want as the 1st person of your 5 generation chart.

Send an email to AFGS with your name etc and the GED file as an attachment.
